Finding Our HOW
You are called to make an impact. I'm called to make an impact. Every one of us is called to make an impact. I regularly write about how each of us is uniquely gifted and uniquely qualified to add value to this world. The WHAT varies for each of us, often presenting itself in drastically different ways from person to person.
One of my WHATs is to help bend the culture when it comes to the intersection of money, meaning, and work. I feel called to lean into this, hopefully helping others along the way. This calling feels like it runs deep within my soul and through my blood. The WHAT is one thing, but the HOW is a completely different consideration.
When I was a bit more naive and small-minded, I thought my only HOW was through my professional coaching. Sure, coaching has been a wonderful HOW in my life, allowing me to meet individuals and couples right where they are. Over time, though, I learned there are other HOWs:
Writing (such as this blog)
Podcasting (our Meaning Over Money Podcast, as well as guesting on other shows)
Teaching (ongoing opportunities with local high schools and colleges)
Speaking (which was previously my biggest fear in life)
Speaking of speaking, I have a bunch of speaking events coming up, including a public talk I'd love to invite you to! If you're in the Des Moines area next week, I'll be speaking at an Ankeny Chamber event on Wednesday (9/9) about the relentless pursuit of excellence. It's my newest keynote talk, focused on the importance of raising the bar, holding the standard, and throwing "best practices" out the window. In a world of good enough, I want to challenge people to think absurdly. Regardless of what you do for a living, I promise this talk is relevant to you, those you serve, and the mission you're trying to accomplish. You can learn more and sign up HERE! I hope to see some of you there.
Enough about me; let's end this piece with you! I strongly encourage you to find your HOW. Once you know the WHAT (areas and ways you're uniquely gifted and qualified to help others), you need a HOW, an outlet. My best encouragement is to simply try different ideas. Try something and see if it sticks. If it does, do it again. If it doesn't, try something else. There's only one way to find out.....so we might as well find out.
Think of your impact journey like a blank canvas. We're starting from scratch. Anything is on the table.....but not until we're willing to pick up the brush. You might fall flat on your face (like I may do at next week's talk), but you might also make a positive impact on someone else's journey. That's the most exciting part about each of us being uniquely gifted and qualified in different ways; we all have a chance to make a difference in this world. We just need to start.
