102 - 42% of Americans Making $100K+ Live Paycheck-to-Paycheck
We open the episode by talking about a recent survey finding 42% of Americans making at least $100,000+ live paycheck-to-paycheck. This is a staggering statistic! How can someone make that much money and still barely make ends meet!?!? In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses why income isn't the most important factor, how so many people end up in this position, why people from all income levels face similar financial hurdles, and how we can best utilize the income we're blessed with (whether little or a lot) to gain traction in our lives. We hope you find this episode encouraging!

With spring break and summer coming up, we thought it would be fun to talk about travel. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses the importance of treating travel just like we would our electric bill or our groceries. Why? Because it's important! We discuss how to make it a consistent item in your budget, stay intentional, then simply act when the opportunity to travel arises. No second-guessing, no debt, no stress. Just memories and awesome experiences.

100 - Why Would You Pursue Meaning Over Money?
One of the most frequent questions we get asked is about host Travis Shelton's drastic decision to leave his career and take a 90% pay cut to do something different. Why? Why would someone do that? Why would you take such a hit, especially with two toddlers and being the sole income of the family? Well, the name Meaning Over Money isn't just a name. It inherently represents who we are and how we live our lives. In today's episode, Travis shares the real reason behind his decision.

It inherently represents who we are and how we live our lives. In today's episode, Travis shares the real reason behind his decision. But his decision and his reasoning is just that, his. We each have our own story, our own journey, and our own path to walk. So many people around us are walking their own meaning over money journeys. Amazing stories are being written, seemingly-crazy decisions are being made, and people are being impacted. It isn't unique to us, and we certainly don't have a monopoly on meaning, but we we do have a microphone. So we're going to continue to lean into the idea of putting meaning over money. We hope this episode a) helps you understand where we're coming from, b) gives you something to think about with your own life, and c) inspires you to say "yes" to a very scary/exciting decision you've been pondering for months (or years).

098 - When it Comes to Debt, Interest Isn't Your Problem
Whenever the topic of debt comes up, especially if we go down the road of talking about "good debt" and "bad debt", the conversation ultimately veers towards the direction of assessing interest rates. We usually justify debt as "good" when it has a lower rate, and often classify it as "bad" when it has a higher rate. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he thinks we are overlooking the most important consideration.

In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he thinks we are overlooking the most important consideration. We don't pay interest.....we pay payments. There's a big difference. Yeah, interest sucks.....but what sucks even more is the big check we need to write each month (even if it's not interest). Each time we spend our money on those payments, we don't get to spend it on something more important or more enjoyable.

097 - OK is the Most Dangerous Place to Be
When we think about this money stuff, we often perceive those who are hurting or going through some serious financial issues as the most at-risk. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains why he thinks we have it backwards. The people who are going through junk have a distinct inflection point to work through, whereas those who are ok most likely don't....and won't. When things are going ok, we can often justify our passivity and instead choose to simply endure/tolerate what's in front of us. This can lead to some serious consequences down the road. If you're on the fence or living just OK, we hope today's episode will make you think and consider making some changes. After all, you deserve better than OK.

096 - There's No Such Thing as Passive Income
Today's episode is a quick-hitter, and one that will surely anger some. It seems like everyone is talking about passive income income these days. Frankly, we don't believe there's such a thing as "passive" income. Either it's not nearly as passive as one would let on, or if it does have an element of passivity to it, the work it takes to create it is as far from passive as imaginable. In other words, if someone is trying to sell you on the idea of "passive income", it's either because a) it's a scam, b) they are a liar, or c) they are naive to the work it takes to make it actually work. Your feedback and passive income schemes are welcome!

095 - "How Much Do I Need in My Emergency Fund?"
From time to time, we talk about the importance of having an emergency fund. You know, the thing that protects us when life throws a major curveball our way. It's when, not if. Without an emergency fund, these curveballs can cause detrimental financial and relational turmoil in our lives, which can lead to a spiral of negative consequences. With one, however, these situations are often downgraded to a frustrating inconvenience. Ouch! In today's episode, we discuss some of the questions surrounding emergency funds, then lean heavy into the question of how much each of us should have in our respective funds.

In today's episode, we discuss some of the questions surrounding emergency funds, then lean heavy into the question of how much each of us should have in our respective funds. It's different for everyone, and we hope to give you the tools to determine the right amount for you.

It means the world to us. If you have any questions, be sure to hit us up with a DM or an e-mail. We will address it privately or through the podcast. Here are the questions in today's episode:
1) How do I get back on track with my budget if I overspend?
2) How does your money mindset impact your financial life?
3) 1) I can’t invest a lot of money today. It’s frustrating. I know I need to invest x, but I can only invest y. What should I do?

093 - Give Yourself a Contract (Well, Kinda)
Sometimes, life feels like one never-ending journey with no stopping point. Nowhere is this more true than with our job. Our current reality feels like it will live in perpetuity. That's great if it's something awesome. But what if it's not awesome? In today's episode, host Travis Shelton shares an idea he implemented in his own career more than 15 years ago. When we put an arbitrary deadline or ending date on something, it gives us the motivation to keep going, the energy to see it through, and provides some structure to create and execute a plan. If done well, it can change everything.

092 - Adjusting For Inflation
Inflation. It's a word everyone has been talking about. We can't go anywhere without someone dropping the term or throwing out some opinion. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton explains what inflation is, discusses how it impacts each of us (probably more than we realize), and provides some simple steps to combat it in our own lives. Inflation is real, and it's hurting a lot of people right now. Hopefully this episode gives you some tools to navigate it in one piece and with far less stress.

091 - Sometimes We Fail
As much as we'd like to think we can always keep kicking butt and moving forward, sometimes we fail. There's really no way to sugarcoat it. It's not all roses and sunshine, regardless of what people on IG try to tell us. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton gets real about a multi-week stretch that felt like a whole lot of losing. He discusses his experience, the feelings behind it, and how he tries to rectify things when he lets people down. For some of you, this may hit a little too close to home. In any event, we hope it adds value!

090 - Putting the Recent Stock Market Tumble into Context
As we predicted all the way back in Episode 13 (linked below), people are freaking out over the stock market falling 10%+ just 24 days into the new year. Yeah, it can be scary.....but it shouldn't be. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses how the recent stock market slide compares to past events and puts it into a bigger perspective. In short, this is nothing new and it should be expected. We try to zoom out to show you why this isn't nearly as scary as it seems, and why patience/discipline is warranted here.

089 - "I Got Out of Debt....Again. How Do I Stay Out?"
As host Travis Shelton always says, getting out of debt is the easy part. The hard part is staying out. We get this question a lot. One of our listeners has made tough decisions, acted intentionally, and made the necessary sacrifices in order to pay off the debt. Huge win!!! But life continues, things happen, and we and we can quickly find ourselves right back where we started. In today's episode, we discuss why this happens and how we can structure our life in a way for it to NEVER happen again. It's not easy, but it's most certainly doable. A few simple tweaks and this journey gets a whole lot easier.

086 - When Your Job is Literally Killing You
A lot of us hate our job. We dread it, it causes stress, and we're in an overall bad mood before, during, and after. For others, it's literally killing you. Migraines, back pain, hair loss, constant sickness, insomnia.....some of us are battling some crazy physical ailments not realizing they may be job-related. When we talk about how 70% of Americans dislike or hate their job, we don't use the word "hate" lightly. For some of us, our work is literally killing us. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses this phenomenon and reveals even he can relate from personal experience. This is no joking matter, so let's get it out in the open!

085 - When Paying Off Debt Becomes an Idol
Sometimes good things can become bad. Paying off debt is one of those things. There has become an entire movement based around the pursuit of becoming debt-free. We're all for it, but there's a toxic underside to this at times. For some, the journey to pay off debt can become an idol that blocks out all the other good things in life. Faith, relationships, meaningful work, serving, generosity, fun. These are all good things, important things. But for some, paying off debt becomes the sole focus in life....to the point where something that should be a positive becomes a negative.

084 - Investing: Fees, the Secret Thief
Whether we know it or not, we pay fees when we invest. Sometimes these fees are obvious, but usually they are somewhat behind the scenes. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses the importance of minding fees and how detrimental they can be to your long-term investing performance. This one nuance can literally equate to $1M+ for a young adult who is early in their investing career. It's hard to put a dollar amount value on a lot of our content, but this one is clear. This one decision, which takes less than 10 minutes, is critical to one's investing journey.

083 - Investing: When "Good" is Bad and "Bad" is Good
When it comes to investing, we tend to have a certain expectation of what we should make per year in the stock market. Some say 6%-8%, some say 8%-10%, others say 10%-12%. Regardless of what your expectation is, it causes something to happen in us. If the annual performance of a given year is above our number, it's a "good" year.....and if it's below our number, it's a "bad" year. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses the problems with this mindset.

He explains the truth behind the history of the stock market, how that should impact our perspective, and what to do about it. Sometimes a "good" year is actually bad, and sometimes a "bad" year is actually good. Clear as mud? We hope this episode helps clarify things!
