A World With No Truth

My son Finn is obsessed with the now-infamous Tesla flying car. All little boys love cars, and what's better than a car than a flying car?!?! However, his obsession is not what you're probably thinking.

"It's not real, Dad! It's definitely A.I.!!! It's obviously A.I. Nobody should believe that's actually real."

Uhhhhhh, okay. "But Finn, didn't you see that they had a whole audience there just to prove it wasn't A.I.?"

"The people on the video are A.I., too, Dad!!!"

It's weird to live in a world where even a 10-year-old boy doesn't let his adventurous spirit believe what he's seen with his own eyes. We're entering a world with no truth, which is a scary place to be.

In another version of this, I'll regularly encounter conversations with clients and friends about a topic that I've specialized in for more than a decade. I'll bring years of experience and hundreds of proven examples to the table, only to have the other person rattle off how this person on TikTok or that person on IG preaches something completely opposite. It's disorienting! It's a world with no truth.

401(k)s are a great example. 401(k)s have been the backbone of personal retirement planning for decades. Most people I know have, or will someday have, the financial resources to care for themselves when they're no longer able to work, largely thanks to their 401(k). Yet, at the same time, we live in a world with no truth. Thousands of online know-it-alls spout off about how 401(k)s are a scam. You're stupid if you use a 401(k). 401(k)s are the gateway to financial slavery. 401(k)s are just there to rip you off and make you poor. I now receive weekly calls or texts about whether it's safe or smart to invest in 401(k)s. It's a world with no truth.

We need to be more diligent and discerning than ever. Just because there are a million wild opinions about something doesn't mean there still isn't truth. Everyone is free to have their own opinions, but that doesn't make them right. Now, more than ever, we need to seek the truth-tellers, the experienced, the proven. We won't always get it right. We won't always land our plane on the correct runway. However, we must endeavor to do better, always seeking the truth. In a world with no truth, truth still exists.
