Just Keep Going
I recently ran into a former youth group kid. I hadn't seen her in nearly a decade, so this coincidental encounter was a nice little blessing. When I asked her what she does for work, she shared about her career. To my delight, she is doing exactly what she told me she wanted to do as a 17-year-old! This isn't an easy career, either!
"How did you make it happen?" I asked.
"I just kept going. I figured I couldn't fail if I just kept moving forward."
That, right there. "I just kept going." There's so much power in just putting one foot in front of the other. In a world that tells us we deserve clear and immediate results, playing the long game is often the answer to what ails us.
I think about this a lot with my work. At 45 years old, I may have 40 more years to figure this out. I hope I'm better tomorrow than I was today, and I hope I'm better the next day than I am tomorrow. The long game!
Here's the irony in playing the long game. Playing the long game is often the recipe for succeeding faster than playing the short game. Why? Because we make better decisions when we play the long game. We don't take shortcuts. We don't seek instant gratification. The best long-term decisions are often the best decisions.....period. Therefore, we gain more traction and find the results we're seeking.
Just keep going, as my young friend would say. Keep moving forward and see what happens.
