One Big Bucket List

Bucket List. This term is often used in America to describe the big, unique, and interesting things we want to do someday before we die. The key word here is "someday." Bucket list items seem more of a dream than a reality. They are loosely held wishes. We may or may not actually do these things, but the idea of them inspires us and preserves our imagination.

I love the idea of a bucket list, but slightly different. Instead of using the "someday" modifier, I think bucket lists should operate more like a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual to-do list. I think life should be one big bucket list! Not only that, but a bucket list that gets continually checked off and new items added.

Finn and I have been talking about doing a one-on-one camping trip for a while now, and this is our weekend! In fact, I'm lying in the tent as we speak, writing this in 44-degree temps, struggling to get cell reception, as a little boy snuggles next to me. We've had such a great time together and made memories we'll enjoy for decades. Memories such as taking a pitch-black hike in the woods at night, setting up camp together, and too many s’mores by the fire.

It's so easy to say "someday." Someday requires no time, no money, no commitment, no inconveniences, and no work. Someday allows us to continually kick the can down the road. Why not today? Why not next week? Why not next month? If something is important enough to add to your bucket list, it's important enough to plan right now. Check it off! Make memories. Add something new to the list. Repeat. Life is one big bucket list.
