Feed the Machine
Over the past few weeks, I've been building out a multi-dimensional AI database that incorporates every article I've written, every podcast episode I've published, every podcast episode I've guested on, every article I've written for every publication, and every review, comment, and criticism that has been publicly uttered.
Pancakes For the Table
"I always get pancakes for the table. Unlocks the whole menu. It's the best. Everyone who steps into a diner is thinking in their head, 'Should I do pancakes?' But you don't wanna just do pancakes; but you'd eat pancakes. So you get pancakes for the table."
Cost After the Cost
After driving that car into my second year of college, I replaced it with a pretty amazing Acura Integra. Black, sleek, stick shift, bangin' rims. To this day, it's my favorite car I've ever driven. I still think about that car. I drove it into my late 20s.
For the Love of the Game
"Travis, how much money do you make from your blog?" A curious question from a close friend. A few days ago was the 1,400th consecutive day I published an article on this blog. I've spent thousands of hours on this little endeavor, spanning nearly four years of my life.
Finding Our People
"A lot of people hate what you say and disagree with what you believe," one of my closest friends said. As much as I'd like it not to be true, it's very much true. Many people hate what I say and disagree with what I believe. My email inbox would also testify to this!
Understanding the Rules
"You expect kids who aren't even old enough to get a job to save tens of thousands of dollars for a car? Most adults aren't able to save for a car."
Or another:
"I think you lost the plot. Between sports and activities, kids don't have time to work. Sports and activities are their work."
A-, At Worst
Last week, I wrote a piece called "B-, At Best." In it, I was heavily critical of myself after a recent speaking engagement. I recognize that I'm probably too hard on myself, and many of you pointed out that I'm probably too hard on myself, but truth is truth. I could have done better. I could have done MUCH better!
A Moment to Celebrate
My default mode is to keep on trucking, aggressively pursuing the next wins that I'll inevitably not celebrate, either.
Who’s the Old Guy With the Green Face?
The morning quickly derailed from the status quo. I opened my web browser and saw that the headline I'd seen at the library wasn't just odd; it was the beginning of what would become one of the greatest tragedies I'd ever experience. The day was 9/11/2001.
Trucks and Bugs
This is the foundation of financial management, and it's fun to watch my kids (slowly) learn and embrace them. It's a bumpy road, filled with wins, losses, celebrations, tears, progress, and regression.
B-, At Best
I had a speaking engagement yesterday. I've been excited about this one for a while now. My official grade for my performance: B-, at best.
My Favorite Part About Storms
I encountered one of the most intense storms of my life last night. I'm not sure it was THE most intense storm I've ever seen, but it was most certainly the most intense one that I physically endured.
Interest Rates Over Grandkids
They have a 2.9% interest rate on their house, and if they sold it to move closer to family, they would lose this favorable mortgage. Based on the information she provided, this mortgage equates to approximately $1,500/month in value (compared to a market mortgage).
Just a Teacher / A Teacher!
"There's nothing weird and cool about my job. I'm just a teacher." Ouch! This is really sad. This person can't introspectively look at their job and find the meaning, the blessing, the weird, and the cool.
The $1,500 Haircut
This is the story of a $1,500 haircut. A friend of a friend loves getting her hair done. Cut, color, extensions - at a high-end salon - for the low, low price of $1,500. To me (and probably you), this is a staggering amount to spend on a haircut. Why would anyone do something like this? "Well, I can afford it, so why not?"
Burying the Lead
I'm feeling sheepish today. My friend Dave rightfully called me out regarding my recent post titled Chess vs. Checkers.
“I Love Living”
"I love living!" she exclaimed. These were the unexpected words of a young lady at my table at last night's business dinner.
Non-Negotiables
"What are your daily non-negotiables?" This was a question I recently asked a client. He just looked at me funny. Turns out, this is a concept I often discuss with myself in my own head, but not with actual humans.
Deep Thoughts From the Jet
In a scenario I never scripted and wouldn't have seen coming, I occasionally travel to work sites on one of my client's private jets. It's always a surreal experience, and one I'll never fully get used to.
