Financial Non-Financial Financial Decisions
This begs the question. If something is a terrible financial decision, is it, by definition, a bad decision? Conventional wisdom says yes. If, as a family or business, we make a decision that knowingly hurts the bottom line, we collectively view that as a bad decision.
Just Pick One
After all, if we try to be excellent at everything at the same time, we'll ultimately be excellent at none.
One Big Bucket List
Bucket list items seem more of a dream than a reality. They are loosely held wishes. We may or may not actually do these things, but the idea of them inspires us and preserves our imagination.
Head and Heart, Not Dollars and Cents
Whenever the topic of money comes up, we humans like to pretend it's all about black and white, dollars and cents, tactics and strategies. Every decision gets boiled down to what's "the right decision." And by “right decision,” we really mean the one that leaves us with more. More cash. More savings. More stuff. More wealth.
One Level Deeper
Many times, we need to look one level deeper. So often in our lives, we have just enough info to be dangerous, but not enough to truly move the needle.
70,000 Steps vs. 1 Excuse
Something powerful happens to us when we remove excuses. If we take the excuses off the table and tell ourselves that there is no other way but through it, it's amazing what we can accomplish.
What She Said!
After a brief back-and-forth about her trip, she added, "This is the first time I've ever missed work on a vacation and was excited to get back."
Sunk Costs: QB Edition
Social media was abuzz yesterday after news that Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy was traded to the New York Giants. Some loved it, some hated it, and some were flat-out confused. The most prevalent narrative I heard, though, was this: Why would the Vikings trade a 10th overall pick (the spot McCarthy was originally selected) for a 5th-round draft pick?
Rules and Exceptions
Exceptions can be good things, but not everything can be an exception. Exceptions are where people often come off the rails.
The Hamsters Are Getting Tired
You know what the problem with more is? Every time we get more, more is still, well, more.
Cold, Wet, and Dejected
Still, looking back, those were formative moments in my journey. Tasting defeat like that helps mold us into something different, something better.
Just Keep Going
"How did you make it happen?" I asked. "I just kept going. I figured I couldn't fail if I just kept moving forward."
Don’t Hoard the Pain
Sometimes, we go through things in life that are deeply painful. Experiences that forever change the trajectory of our lives. Moments we wish we never had to endure, but will never be able to forget. Pain that perpetually lingers, ranging from a dull ache to a knife-like stabbing.
Through the World’s Eyes
Their concern was sincere. Their intentions were pure. Honestly, I appreciated their generous spirit. Someone recently pulled me aside and asked me if they could help buy something for one of my kids. Why? They assumed we couldn't afford it.
Replacing One Stressor With Another
We feel a margin that we haven't felt in a while. One would think this would be the perfect time to harness said margin for the greater good of our family, right? Wrong!
Happy Best Day of the Week!!
This isn't me saying that every single person should quit their job and do something different. For some, yeah, you totally should. However, for many, it's less about that and more about finding value in the work you're already doing.
Feed the Machine
Over the past few weeks, I've been building out a multi-dimensional AI database that incorporates every article I've written, every podcast episode I've published, every podcast episode I've guested on, every article I've written for every publication, and every review, comment, and criticism that has been publicly uttered.
Pancakes For the Table
"I always get pancakes for the table. Unlocks the whole menu. It's the best. Everyone who steps into a diner is thinking in their head, 'Should I do pancakes?' But you don't wanna just do pancakes; but you'd eat pancakes. So you get pancakes for the table."
Cost After the Cost
After driving that car into my second year of college, I replaced it with a pretty amazing Acura Integra. Black, sleek, stick shift, bangin' rims. To this day, it's my favorite car I've ever driven. I still think about that car. I drove it into my late 20s.
